Putting petrol in a diesel vehicle can lead to very serious problems and can cause irreversible damage to your engine. The properties of diesel and petrol fuels are different, with diesel acting as a lubricant, whereas petrol increases friction. The more petrol that is put into a diesel car, the greater the damage could be, often requiring new injectors and filters and in the worst cases, a new engine entirely.
If you realise you have made this common mistake whilst you are at the petrol station, do not start your engine. Putting your car into neutral can help salvage your engine before the fuel can cause any damage. The longer your car is left running, the greater the risk of damage will be.
A diesel engine is extremely reliable and can last a very long time if properly maintained. The lifespan of a diesel engine depends on the quality of the fuel, oil and filters used throughout its service life. On average, a diesel engine can run for over 1,000,000 kilometers (approx. 30 years) without needing any major repairs if it’s properly maintained. However, to ensure its longevity, you need to know the basics of maintaining it.
For example, oil changes should be done every 5,000 – 7,000 kilometers or every six months to help keep your oil clean and prevent buildup in the engine. Air filters should also be replaced once per year as they remove dirt and dust from the air that passes through them, which can prematurely wear on parts inside your engine if not filtered out.
Black smoke is a normal by-product of diesel engines, but it can also indicate problems. In most cases, the black smoke that comes out of the exhaust pipe is caused by not enough air entering the engine cylinder to fully burn all the fuel injected into it. The amount of air required to combust fuel in an engine varies depending on how much fuel is supplied to each cylinder, as well as its compression ratio and turbochargers.
Insufficient air can be caused by a faulty injector that is supposed to open and close to prevent clogging the cylinders with fuel. When injectors are dirty, unburned fuel enters the exhaust system before reaching the combustion chamber, resulting in black smoke.
The primary duties of an auto mechanic and diesel mechanic are similar as they both maintain vehicle engines. However, whilst a regular mechanic works on cars and trucks running on gasoline, a diesel mechanic specialises in the repair and maintenance of diesel-powered vehicles. Because a diesel mechanic’s training is specific to diesel engines, auto mechanics will not have the same level of knowledge and expertise when it comes to engine repairs and system repairs for diesel vehicles.
